It seems you did not (to quote myself) "Do a fresh installation of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.2 with all default values." The last part is crucial to be able to reproduce this bug. Please make sure that in the step "Software selection" you keep the option "Desktop environment" selected. When I left out this selection I also could not reproduce the bug. This bug is really getting stranger every day. How can the software selection outside of the chroot trigger an issue like that?!
