AFAICT Debian includes many packages that violate software patents

To my knowledge, neither Debian nor any other distribution of Linux has ever been found to infringe a valid patent. Just because a software patent has been issued by the PTO does not mean it is truly valid or infringed. Only a court of law can make those determinations.
