Perhaps a bit of clarification on the desert island test: Are there really two desert island tests? 1) Person is stranded with a laptop* and a Software CD set (source and binaries) Can she make modifications/improvements to the software, or combine it in a novel way to make a communications device to get rescued? 2) Shipwreck, so several people are stranded with a laptop, etc...
