Updates are released mostly for two reasons: - there is feature added; - there is bug or vulnerability fixed. In second case you may never encounter those bugs (good for you), you may not fall victim to vulnerability and you may think that tool is working fine when in fact it's not. Most noticeable example - renegotiation vulnerability in OpenSSL.
