Hi Mike, I've got etch on a Thinkpad T40, and I recall having sound problems at first till I set the two "Jack Sense" switches to "off" (they are on by default, which means you hear nothing unless something is plugged into the jack sockets - almost a bug?). I used Kmix to switch them; but alsamixergui or gmix etc. will do it too. This may not be related to your problem but it might be worth a try.
