I've been running sid on my inspiron 8200 laptop for years with the 2.4 kernels. Every time I've tried 2.6 it had major problems. Unfortunatly, lately they've managed to break 2.4 in sid so it has a different set of major problems.
I'm back to trying 2.6 again. At least it now installs and boots. Problems with 2.6.16-1-686 in decreasing importance: Screen turns off and won't turn back on: After leaving the system in X for a while, after the screen has locked, the backlight turns off. The only way to get it back on is a hard reboot. Screen does not turn off when lid closed. Sound does not work. The magic to get it working under 2.4 was to remove all traces of alsa from the system. Suspend: it would suspend to ram if lid closed when on battery under 2.4. xapm no longer works to display battery status. Obviously the first makes 2.6 hopeless. Perhaps some of the others could be cured by configuring acpi and alsa. I use the nv driver in X if that matters. Can anyone offer any ideas on how to cure these problems? -- Blars Blarson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.blars.org/blars.html With Microsoft, failure is not an option.
