I do not think that this is a problem with your hardware.
i think that skype is the problem. They use an old sound
library. I have also problems with skype. I use Gnome with
SID. I cannot use skype when i listen to music. And skype
block my sound card when i use it. Sometime i have to kill
skype to use my sound card again.
Look at the skype homepage. There is a small help with the
different sound "servers". I had to change the esd config
to get it to work
