Also try to turn off anti-aliasing for small fonts (it's better to get freetype2, compiled with BYTECODE_VECTOR enabled & msttcorefonts (i can give you compilde deb file, if you need this)) also read this http://avi.alkalay.net/linux/docs/font-howto/Font.html
