It works now. I'm not sure why. I repeated the following procedure various times:
1) Disconnect power (AC and battery) 2) Reconnect power 3) Boot. After leaving the machine without any power for several hours, I noticed that the machine would recognize the new memory (perhaps the BIOS self-cleared) but crash. Then suddenly, voila! It worked.
