Hmm, i'm not sure if your problem is the one i had on my R40, but i can tell you it started very much the same way. Then after having that that for a while, black screen touched in (you power on and there is no response, try again and works), following errors to detect the memory. In the end i ended up having to send in the thinkpad to IBM. They exchanged the motherboard and upgraded it to the latest controler and bios. Since then it works like a breeze. I don't want to paint the devil on the wall for ya, but it just sounds way to familiar. What might help you to detect the actual cause of hanging, you can switch of the quick boot in the bios... dunno if that will help you.
