kde and gnome not wokring

I have a DELL Latitude 840 with debian install i was having some problems with kde because i need to install it but it said i was had broken packages and couldnt reintsall, so i switched over to gnome for a while but when i tried to switch back to gnome both gnome and kde stopped working. everytime my system boots up it says

apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.16ac)
apm: Overridden by ACPI

it says that kdm is already running but it isnt.

Can someone help me please
