While I don't normally use WPA, I did have to at Debconf this year and added some script to whereami at that point to try and be useful with wpa_supplicant. I'm happy to help you through the problem, if you haven't sorted it out yourself. If you have sorted it out, it would be useful to understand the approach you have taken.
