Hi Bas, I solved the problem I originally posted and the reason for failure was... myself. I discovered on a madwifi-related website that you can't use madwifi and an SMP kernel, which is what I was doing. I haven't a clue as to why the two are incompatible. So just to get that out the way: are you running an SMP kernel? If so, install a non-SMP kernel (very easy with Debian) and try again. It worked out of the box for me.
