well, I tried already on my inspiron 600m setting i8k as a module and forcing it. So I can see now the i8k module up and running:
% lsmod Module Size Used by ... i8k 7184 1 However although I also have set the buttons for increasing/decreasing volume, the keys just don't work at all (i8kutils already installed): % cat /etc/i8kbuttons I8KBUTTONS_UP_CMD="amixer set Master 1+" I8KBUTTONS_DOWN_CMD="amixer set Master 1-" I8KBUTTONS_MUTE_CMD="amixer set Master toggle" # Poll interval (milliseconds) I8KBUTTONS_TIMEOUT=100 # Autorepeat interval (milliseconds) I8KBUTTONS_REPEAT=0 They simply don't work. I haven't tried yet, however xmodmap must be an alternative under X, although I'd go for a more general approach covering X and non X environment... So unless 2 inspiron 600m may have different hardware, I would think i8k buttons don't work for inspiron 600m... Javier.
