Hi, I have here USB drive which when attached to the USB port yesterday created this in /var/log/messages (slightly reformatted for this message, but nothing was removed):
kernel: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcda and address 2 kernel: usb 2-1: Product: Flash Disk kernel: usb 2-1: Manufacturer: USB kernel: usb 2-1: SerialNumber: BA0304404D7F3E1C kernel: SCSI subsystem initialized kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... kernel: scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered. usb.agent[5189]: usb-storage: loaded successfully kernel: Vendor: JetFlash Model: TS64MJF2B Rev: 2.00 kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 kernel: sda: Unit Not Ready, sense: kernel: : Current: sense key: Unit Attention kernel: Additional sense: Not ready to ready change, medium may have changed kernel: SCSI device sda: 128000 512-byte hdwr sectors (66 MB) kernel: sda: Write Protect is off kernel: SCSI device sda: 128000 512-byte hdwr sectors (66 MB) kernel: sda: Write Protect is off kernel: sda: unknown partition table scsi.agent[5279]: sd_mod: loaded sucessfully (for disk) kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Unfortunately, as of today, the drive has refused to work -- both under Linux as well as with Windows (both 98 and XP Home). Even when inserted to Windows, the LED control is just still off and under Linux nothing lands in any /var/log/ file (of course, mount ends with failure -- /dev/sda doesn't exist). I didn't do anything strange with the drive -- just copying some files back and forth between two computers. Is it possible that the drive just dies without any apparent reason? Does it happen often to USB drives?
