I am using Debian on Compaq V2009. It works fine after a struggle of hardware configuration. I suggest you reading the articles on http://www.linux-laptop.net. There is a category for compaq laptop.
I did meet a lot of troubles during the installation, but trust me. Debian works well on V2000. If you meet any problem during the installation, you can mail me.
