No, your hard disc should be recognized and you should be able to repartition. You should probably choose the "manual partitioning method". The screen you're looking for is something like [1]. This screenshot only shows the disk, but if there are already partitions present you will see them listed below the disk. Could you please try the daily build of the installer [2]? If it does not work, please send an installation report [3] to the debian-boot maillist. The output of lspci and lspci -v is very important for us to be able to trace the problem.
