No, your hard disc should be recognized and you should be able to repartition. You should probably choose the "manual partitioning method". The screen you're looking for is something like [1]. Could you please try the daily build of the installer [2]? If it does not work, please send an installation report [3] to the debian-boot maillist. The output of lspci and lspci -v is very important for us to be able to trace the problem.
