You should look into laptop mode (what kernel are you using?, 2.4.23-pre5 or there abouts and up has it built in). If you have a kernel that has laptop mode you can do echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/block_dump and it will print which processes access the disk. Also, I am having a problem with emacs now that it keeps saving backups every 30 seconds or so.
