It results if you did not run "depmod" after altering the modules.conf. So, run depmod and see what that fixes. Alternatively: remove the pcmcia-start-script from the init-process and the corresponding module from modules.conf. Then run depmod, reboot and afterwards try to load the modules with modprobe or insmod and see what happens. Just an idea though ...
