Being careful is always good, but it worked in this case... maybe a more sensible version of cp? e.g. cp -rp /lib /mnt/ will preserve the symlinks whereas cp -p /lib/* /mnt/lib/ won't.
Anyway, I now have kde3 running, but I'm struggling a bit with my ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (ticking over slowly with the vesa driver at the moment).
