I'm also looking into either Toshiba, Dell, or Apple, to run unstable. The main purpose of the machine will be to run comedi <for data acquisition> and burn CDs for data archiving. I have experience running Debian potato <on desktop> and Woody <on an IBM laptop>. I have been scouring the tuxmobil.org website <very informative> and there is one account of an install <RH9> on a Tecra S1. I was looking at the Satellite Pro 6100 <because there appears to be more experience "out there" with it>. You will also find some good links related to Toshiba at the bottom of the tuxmobil.org/toshiba.html page. The same would apply for Dell <been looking at the Inspirion 8500 and the Latitude D800, I emailed them <Dell a question some days ago and am still waiting for a response, must say this is wearing at my enthousiasm for Dell...>.
It would also appear that the Apple hardware is pretty well supported <again from what I can glean from tuxmobil penguinppc.org. I'm at the stage now where I've read enough to not know what I want anymore... *^\ Opinions and esp. advice welcome, cheers On Mon, Aug 04, 2003 at 12:41:21PM -0400, charlie derr wrote: > I'm about to purchase a new laptop and wondered if anyone > has had any specific success/failures with either of the following: > > Toshiba Tecra S1 > 1.4GHz Mobile Intel Pentium M processor w/Centrino, 1GB RAM, > 60GB hard drive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM, 56K, 10/100 Ethernet, > Intel WiFi 802.11b, Windows XP Pro and a 15" UXGA active-matrix display > Graphics Processor Vendor > ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 > > Sony VAIO GRT100 > 2.5GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M, 512MB, > 60GB hard drive, 24X10X24 CD-RW/8X DVD-ROM, 56K, > 10/100 Ethernet, WiFi 802.11b, Windows XP Pro > and a 15" XGA active-matrix display > Graphics Processor Vendor > NVidia GeForce4 420 Go > > > I don't particularly care about the modem or the wireless, > and I'll probably run sid (unstable) on it, but I was hoping > to get a bit of feedback if there's someone willing to share. > > thanks so very much in advance, > ~c > > > > -- > To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > with a subject of "unsubscribe".
