hi there i'm new to the list and apparently nobody has this problem, so maybe someone could just help me out on it?
i have a almost new (bought end of may) dell inspiron 5100 and i can't get linux to work on it. i don't know if it is a hardware problem. when trying to install debian from dvd there is some failure installing cxref - i don't know what it is and if it is laptop related. anyway it means that it doesn't install all the packages selected with taksel like xserver, gnome, kde, bash, tex, ... because of being new to debian i tried to check with knoppix as well - it has some sort of interrupt conflict at 0f.r or similar and it tells me that it works fine except for the fact that it doesn't show me any graphical user interface. just the text consoles are working. then i tried my old suse linux 8.0 distribution - it told me that it was successfully installed (while showing that same error at some point in the installation process) but now when i try to boot it the screen just gets black and NOTHING happens, not even del-alt-ctrl works (just power off works). i don't really know if this problem is laptop related but i believe so as the suse dvd as well as knoppix worked very well on my former laptop (siemens fujitsu). thanks for your help. maybe the debian dvd i have has some failures - it is distributed by linux system labs australia (any hints?). but i'm not sure if all that stuff could work at all... regards johanna -- NEUE ADRESSE!!!
