X supports being told different frequency information for an internal
and an external monitor, but this generally results in both of them
being on at the same time. Maybe you might have something to poke
/dev/nvram and tell it to change backlight state, as if you pressed your
Fn+CRT button, but other than that, I'm not sure how possible it is to
make what you just asked automatic.
I find it hand to have both displays running the same data, usually;
presentations are easier.
