I tried using mpg123 with the same result. On my 560X (2640-70U) I use xmixer (from mctools-lite) to mess with the volume. My /etc/modules.conf says: : alias char-major-14 cs4232 : options cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=5 (although the options are just black magic to me). The sound quality through the built-in speaker is, well, rather lousy.
