I had problems with an ESS 1878 on my old Medion Notebook. In a
RH-Mailinglist
I found the hint to try ESS 1688-Module instead and it worked. Maybe this
helps...

BTW: What does 'lspci' say? Which module does knoppix load, when you start
it
            from CD?
