Which kernel do you have installed? I don't think the 2.2.20-idepci kernel includes any USB support. If you are running that one, you need to upgrade to either the normal 2.2 kernel (kernel-image-2.2.20-5) or a 2.4 kernel (kernel-image-2.4.18-386 or -586tsc or -686). Or compile your own with USB support included.
