I think these (and most recent-ish thinkpads) are pretty well supported.
You can look at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ibm.html and see what
people say about the thinkpad 600x.
I have the 600e (earlier pentium-ii) version, which has similar
hardware, and it works pretty much flawlessly. I would definitely look
at the directions about the suspend-to-disk partition, so that the Fn-f7
combination works.
The only problem I have with it is that the sound is typically pretty
quiet. When I'm in a machine room and trying to listen to music while I
work, I can't hear very well.
