PON Problems

I used pppconfig to set up my DialUp Worldnet account but it won't start
PPPD.  I type 'pon worldnet' and it uses the modem alright, I hear all of
the annoying modem sounds, then it stops.  I check ifconfig and nothing
happened.  I have tried both CHAP and PAP and neither work and I have tried
the script through root.  Any advice?
