Actually, you even need xfs -- X can server fonts (including Type1 and TT fonts) directly (I am not sure, what is xfs worth on laptop which is not expected to serve fonts to anybody else). I have this in the config file: Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" EndSection (and do not check, that you have line Load "freetype" in Module Section).
