another update, really going to bed this time... successfully installed kernel 2.2.20-5 and the pcmcia-modules pkgs. Feels like I'm getting closer...
lsmod now includes: 3c589_cs 8544 0 (unused) ds 6400 0 [3c589_cs] i82365 22672 2 pcmcia_core 45824 0 [3c589_cs ds i82365] and modprobe is successful. # cardctl ident Socket 0: no product info available Socket 1: no product info available (Socket 0 holds the network card, Socket 1 is currently empty.)
