If you have a Synaptics TouchPad, you may try the specific driver from http://www.mobilix.org/touchpad_driver.html if your laptop is supported (or even if it is not: my laptop is a Presario EA 711 and it works more or less: I have had several problems restarting X with this driver, so I have reverted to the default driver from XFree).
