On a new woody laptop install I used the bf-2.4 stock kernel, the pcmcia-modules-2.4.18-bf2.4 binary package, and the pcmcia-cs package and got the PCMCIA network card working perfectly. Had to manually edit /etc/network/interfaces.
Then I compiled a custom 2.4.18 kernel with built-in PCMCIA support (on my desktop computer, then transfered the make-kpkg deb to the laptop via floppy because the laptop is a much slower P120.) I'll attach the relevant sections of the kernel .config file below. Simply booting the new kernel gave errors that the stand-alone pcmcia modules either weren't found or couldn't be inserted, and finally a message like "no device pcmcia in /proc" OK, the modules needing to be loaded are different now. As the PCMCIA-HOWTO recommends, I changed in /etc/default/pcmcia "PCIC=yenta_socket". Now, I get the following errors at boot time and I am stumped. /lib/modules/2.4.18/pcmcia/yenta_socket.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters ds: no socket drivers loaded! /lib/modules/2.4.18/pcmcia/ds.o: init_module: Operation not permitted Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters Here are the potentially relevant sections of my kernel .config: # # General setup # CONFIG_NET=y CONFIG_PCI=y # CONFIG_PCI_GOBIOS is not set # CONFIG_PCI_GODIRECT is not set CONFIG_PCI_GOANY=y CONFIG_PCI_BIOS=y CONFIG_PCI_DIRECT=y # CONFIG_PCI_NAMES is not set # CONFIG_EISA is not set # CONFIG_MCA is not set CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y # # PCMCIA/CardBus support # CONFIG_PCMCIA=m CONFIG_CARDBUS=y CONFIG_I82092=y CONFIG_I82365=y # CONFIG_TCIC is not set # # Network device support # CONFIG_NETDEVICES=y # # ARCnet devices # # CONFIG_ARCNET is not set CONFIG_DUMMY=y # CONFIG_BONDING is not set # CONFIG_EQUALIZER is not set # CONFIG_TUN is not set # CONFIG_NET_SB1000 is not set # # Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) # # CONFIG_NET_ETHERNET is not set # # Ethernet (1000 Mbit) # # CONFIG_ACENIC is not set # CONFIG_DL2K is not set # CONFIG_MYRI_SBUS is not set # CONFIG_NS83820 is not set # CONFIG_HAMACHI is not set # CONFIG_YELLOWFIN is not set # CONFIG_SK98LIN is not set # CONFIG_FDDI is not set CONFIG_PLIP=m CONFIG_PPP=m # CONFIG_PPP_MULTILINK is not set # CONFIG_PPP_FILTER is not set CONFIG_PPP_ASYNC=m CONFIG_PPP_SYNC_TTY=m CONFIG_PPP_DEFLATE=m CONFIG_PPP_BSDCOMP=m # CONFIG_PPPOATM is not set CONFIG_SLIP=m # CONFIG_SLIP_COMPRESSED is not set # CONFIG_SLIP_SMART is not set # CONFIG_SLIP_MODE_SLIP6 is not set # # PCMCIA network device support # CONFIG_NET_PCMCIA=y # CONFIG_PCMCIA_3C589 is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_3C574 is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_FMVJ18X is not set CONFIG_PCMCIA_PCNET=m # CONFIG_PCMCIA_AXNET is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_NMCLAN is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_SMC91C92 is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_XIRC2PS is not set # CONFIG_ARCNET_COM20020_CS is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_IBMTR is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_XIRCOM is not set # CONFIG_PCMCIA_XIRTULIP is not set # CONFIG_NET_PCMCIA_RADIO is not set # # PCMCIA character devices # CONFIG_PCMCIA_SERIAL_CS=m # CONFIG_MWAVE is not set
