It just works for me, using the built-in VESA modes. Try removing all the modeline statements from your monitor configuration or, if that doesn't work, adding the 800x600 from the file /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/examples/vesamodes.gz [...] > When I use gvidm (thanks for that tip) I only get 1400x1050 offered > and ctrl-alt-+/- don't do anything either. gvidm only presents a menu of the available resolutions; since I don't have a keypad plus on my laptop, this is the only way I can switch resolution. Have a look at the X log file if using the VESA modes fails and see why X doesn't like the mode.
