I configured my X-Server to use /dev/input/mice, using input core. That way my xserver doesn't care if i have an usb mouse connected at all. My logitech dual optical works fine this way. I don't know for sure about suspend, but i don't recall having problems with Xfree 4.1 at least. At least after un- and replugging it should work again. I'll probably try today, when i'm back home...
