Last i checked, XF86 couldn't do two displays on laptop chipsets, at least not in 4.1 and not on ati. Xig's stuff can for a number of laptop chipsets (for instance, I know their r128 driver can) but I haven't actually used it. I don't know if this has been implemented in later versions of X.
