Look over http://www.linux-laptop.net/ for hints! If dmesg shows an audtio device being initialized, did you add yourself to the audio group? If not, modprobe the correct audio driver if one is available. You could probably use lspci to get a hint about the audio chip if you don't already know what it is. Cheers!
