Seems like you've got trouble between your'e Xserver Mousesupport and youre gpm mouse. Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config or XF86Config-4 for the MouseDevice X uses. If you're running gpm the device should be /dev/gpmdata. That was causing trouble on my machine.
