I gather you're running woody (testing). The latest version in unstable is 3.1.33-6, somewhat newer than 3.1.31-7 that you get in testing. You could try downloading that version and see if it works better for you. I'm happily running 3.1.33-2 myself (haven't got round to upgrading to 3.1.33-6 yet, I don't really need it). You can also try putting pcmcia-cs on hold, in which case it won't get upgraded along with everything else. I do this routinely, since if I upgrade pcmcia-cs automatically, it'll kill my current network connection and I may not be able to download any remaining packages to fix a broken system. I keep a local copy of the previous working pcmcia-cs deb files, in case a pcmcia-cs upgrade doesn't work.
