You have been asked to do that during the installation, if you've skiped that, don't worry... there's always a way! What I think all you need to do is to type "modconf" as root into a console, choose "network" and you'll find an entry called "rtl8139" (surprise!). Just select it and type enter, if PCMCIA is running correctly the driver should load without problems. I don't know what's insider kern_compat_k, so maybe you have to edit it to tell make where to search for the rest of the kernel-sources.. don't know that.
