AFAIK, it should `just work'. I think it did with my gf's laptop anyway.
Have you added yourself to the audio group (and logged out/back in again
afterwards)?

I remember I had to do some playing around in /etc/modules (or somewhere
like that, it's been a year).
I had the help of this site: http://www.zabbo.net/maestro3/ (i'm running
the 2.4 kernel)
