Sorry, if this is a FAQ, but I couldn't find with a quick look.
My debian testing has X 4.1.0.1 and fades white switching from console
back to X.
SuSE uses 4.0.3 and is o.k.
Only difference I found was : in Suse.xfree.log:
(II) Open APM successful
(II) Module ABI versions:
XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.1
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.3
XFree86 XInput driver : 0.1
XFree86 Server Extension : 0.1
XFree86 Font Renderer : 0.2
which doesn't appear in /var/log/kdm.log
as well as the line
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.3
appearing in the SusE log not in debian ..
