You may also go directly into the BIOS, as mentioned in the InfraRed-HOWTO ;-) as far as I remember you may reach it by pressing F2 during boot time. Or try `tpctl' http://tpctl.sourceforge.net/ (I don't have an IBM at hand to check whether this really works, but this is a great tool for IBM laptops anyway).
