I use startx myself, and have two scripts to switch between kde and
gnome:

#!/bin/bash
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager
x-session-manager /usr/bin/kde2 50
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager
x-session-manager /usr/bin/gnome-session 99
=================== use-kde ======================
#!/bin/bash
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager
x-session-manager /usr/bin/kde2 99
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager
x-session-manager /usr/bin/gnome-session 50
