Do you have any more information about your trackball?  Are you sure
it's on a serial port?

Ctrl-Alt-F1 will bring you nicely to a text screen.  From there you can
kill xdm (do "/etc/init.d/xdm stop" as root), and then do something like
"startx >& errors.log" (The magic invocation may be different depending
on what shell you use.  That one is for tcsh.)  That will log all of
startx's output (including output to stderr) to errors.log.

A potential culprit could be gpm.  Try "/etc/init.d/gpm stop" and see if
that improves anything.
