I'm not using apm suspend as I imagin you do. I've read about problems with
my laptop and I've yet tried myself.

Yes that what I've done. And that's why I return to gdm after quitting the
gnome session. What I would like to do is to avoid this and halt my system
nicely from gnome. I know that this is a gnome feature but I don't know how
to enable this feature.
