Hi, I got an exprience in that when I was setting up my laptop as a gateway between my LAN and wireless broadband. To successfully get an IP, you should successfully connected to the access point at least. Use iwconfig (wireless toolkit) to see if you are successfully connected. Then, try dhcpcd the interface, it used to be successful in my case.
PS: I do not remember clearly that if you have to plug the card into the first pcmcia slot and turn ifconfig down the local network interfaces first before getting an IP for the wavelan card.
