Install the kernel-package, alsa-headers and alsa-source packages instead of
downloading the sources from the alsa page. (It's the Debian Way.) If you
don't already have it, get the alsa-base, alsautils, and alsaconf packages.
(Do an "apt-get install <package names>" as root.) You may also find fakeroot
to be helpful.
Unpack the alsa sources (it gets installed in /usr/src). *Don't* extract
kernel-source-2.2.17 into /usr/src/linux. Put just extract in /usr/src - it
will make a kernel-source-2.2.17 subdirectory.
Read the kernel-package documentation. There are also helpful instructions in
/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/debian/alsa-source.README.debian (after your
unpack the alsa sources).
