This seems to be a common problem with Thinkpads. Same thing happens on my 600E, and I've heard similar reports from a number of other people. Reloading the modules is the only solution I'm aware of. And yes, this means shutting down any mixers and such, which can be a hassle. I've given up on the gnome panel mixer for just this reason.
