I recompiled the modules and the kernel too. I did not mention that
in my message because this made things worse but could be due to
my lack for skill in the compilation process. I used make-kpkg and
built 2 debs for the kernel image and the pcmcia modules, installed
them and rebooted (with a new boot block for lilo). When /etc/init.d/pcmcia
is invoked the machine jammed and had to be restarted with the reset button.
I booted then with the old 2.0.36 kernel and configured pcmcia.conf
in order to skip this phase at the next boot. I was able then
to load the modules manually and discovered that i82365.o was the
offending module.

That was one of the reasons for upgrading to a new kernel, and since
2.2.14 comes with potato and I wanted to learn more about things
such as glade, vdkbuilder etc I upgraded the system. I know
that many people have got apm and sound working on this laptop, but
that requires 2.2.14, since this kernel has the ESS Maestro driver
in the sound system. When I booted the 2.2.14 kernel I compiled
with this driver statically built, the sound system announced on
the console and a maestro chip was actually recognized
but as I told you I had no chance to run the machine
and check it out.
