problem solved using dselect (didn't have aptitude on machine)
using just apt-get to remove each offending package seemed to be heading into dependency hell, but dselect managed to work it out for me.

As a last resort, you may have to delete this file manually.
First check out what other files exist in the directory, use this information to make an estimate of whether the file is needed.
It is possibly a good idea to do a backup of the directory, before you delete anything.
